Gabriola plan review first reading moved to September

The Gabriola Local Trust Committee moved first reading of the draft Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw to September, 2026, after staff and trustees discussed changes to the draft. [1]
The committee endorsed a revised project charter and requested staff work with Snuneymuxw First Nation staff on a more focused acknowledgment of Snuneymuxw First Nation’s connection to Gabriola Island before the plan is sent for referral. [1]
The minutes say the draft includes population projections, updated steep-slope mapping and revised Development Permit Area boundaries. Staff said allowing more secondary or accessory units on lots outside freshwater hazard areas could add 80-90 total units over what is currently permitted. [1]
Discussion points included dark-sky principles, community-benefit definitions, light-industrial qualifiers, archaeological-site notification, subdivision policy, housing types and an explanation of buffering and filtering on the freshwater hazard map. [1]
