Gabriola committee seeks options to link tree removal to subdivision approval
Trustees asked staff to return in July with options for tying a development permit’s authority to remove trees to provincial approval of a subdivision.

The Gabriola Local Trust Committee asked staff to return to its July meeting with options for linking the tree-removal authority in a development permit to Ministry of Transportation and Transit approval of a subdivision. The request followed discussion of the Centre Stage Holdings application, which seeks permission to remove trees in and outside a steep-slope development permit area.[1]
The committee also asked staff to engage with Snuneymuxw Rights and Title Department about interest in exploring a Heritage Revitalization Agreement, and to provide options and potential consequences of removing subdivision potential for the Official Community Plan’s growth-management discussion.[1]
The minutes say staff reported that the permit guidelines had been met, while noting that only a small portion of the proposed tree removal was within the development permit area. The minutes also record discussion that the area’s current permit guidelines do not protect ecosystems and that work could proceed after the permit is issued even without subdivision approval.[1]
The committee amended the permit to add a reference to the BC Heritage Conservation Act, and that motion carried.[1]
