Gabriola committee gives first reading to updated official plan

The amended plan will be referred to relevant First Nations and agencies after trustees approved changes to its community vision and other sections.

The Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee gave first reading to Bylaw No. 325, the proposed “Gabriola Island Official Community Plan, 2026,” after amending its community vision and directing staff to make further changes before second reading.^[1]

The amended vision describes Gabriola Island as “an active, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable island community” and refers to Indigenous and local cultural heritage, the natural environment and biodiversity, diverse housing and livelihoods, and cooperation among residents, First Nations and all levels of government.^[1]

Trustees also directed changes and further review involving invasive species, referral recipients, engagement with Snuneymuxw First Nation, map orientation, the Freshwater Hazard Map, housing-needs-report references, cultural heritage and archaeological materials, development permit areas, home occupations, and renewable energy and storage infrastructure.^[1]

The committee approved sending Bylaw No. 325 for referral to relevant First Nations and agencies and determined that the bylaw is not contrary to or at variance with the Islands Trust Policy Statement.^[1]

At the same meeting, the committee requested a staff report on opportunities for collaborative freshwater monitoring and data collection, including groundwater-level monitoring, water-use and water-quality reporting, surface-water and climate monitoring, and data sharing.^[1]
