Gabriola committee advances bylaws and updates community plan project

The Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee gave third readings to proposed bylaws concerning the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw, and forwarded them for approval by the Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs and the Islands Trust Executive Committee. [1]
The committee also requested that staff inform the applicant about Development Permit Area guidelines for stormwater runoff that will apply following third reading. [1]
The committee amended the project charter for the comprehensive Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw review to include an in-person Community Information Meeting before first reading, scheduled for the late afternoon or evening. [1]
The committee requested an electronic special business meeting in March, 2026, for a Freshwater Footprint presentation and discussion of community engagement and communications on the Official Community Plan. [1]
Staff said recommendations would be brought forward on how to embed Freshwater Footprint hazard mapping into Official Community Plan policies, potentially establishing new standards for development application review. [1]
The committee said it would review draft policy language in April, and there was a desire to schedule a Community Information Meeting in May. [1]
